Whats best calibrated or non Calibrated stone paving what are Calibrated Indian sandstone flagstone paving, Basically they are the same stone as the Non calibrated but are generally much thinner on average 22mm by having the back of the flagstone shaved off to give a consistent thickness through out the pack . They are far easier to use and most landscapers will use nothing but calibrated stone nowadays. They came about as shipping costs increased and importers wanted and needed to get more stone in the container to keep costs down. Where as you can get 21 sq mts in a crate of calibrated you are looking at about 14-15 sq mts of non calibrated stone in a crate. Also the landscapers like them as they do exactly the same job as the thicker slabs but are far easier to move and can be done a lot of the time with 1 person. They do work out more expensive that the Non Calibrated ones but you should be able to negotiate a far better laying cost as they can be put down much quicker saving time . This is mainly produced with stones from India and China . Theses can be used and laid on a level screed bed rather than the harder to use un-calibrated stone paving. The calibration takes place on the under side of the stone and generally you will see lines running on the underside where the machinery has been used to level it off. Whilst Calibrated natural stone is more expensive than standard non calibrated most landscapers quote less for laying so you should make them aware that you are going to purchase Calibrated and if you are using it yourself you will find it much easier to use. Reasons to Use Calibrated Stone Paving Easier to lay . No variance in thickness. Lighter to pick up and carry, Cheaper Costs for having laid. More cost effective when it comes to delivery costs (up to 22sq mts per tonne) How did I end up with Stains and Marks on my Natural sandstone paving Your Stone flags may have been Spot Bedded also known as Dab laying and is a way some people use when laying flagstone paving, It consists generally of 5 to 6 spots of cement placed one on each corner and maybe a couple in the centre and the flagstone is layed on top . The cavity below the slab can allow surface water to build up and subsidence or instability to occur. The gap below could make them more fragile and break when put under any stress or weight. Damp Patches may arise as the cement can act as a wick. and if using sea sand can stain the stone as in picture. Small creatures such as ants mice and insects like to burrow and can cause a lot of movement under the flagstone. It may be cheaper to have them layed on a full soli
Advice is to just check with the person laying the flagstones which method he is going to use. / |
